When silence is golden. Except when it isn’t

Image
Hello, lovelies. You know that time, when the words are on the tip of your tongue, but instead of saying what needs to be said, you stop. Breathe. Smile and keep inside all those words that needed to be spoken. So why do we do it? Why do we hold back when what we really need to be doing is getting all those thoughts out, aired, spoken and finally laying them to rest? Is it our very British custom to always beat around the bush? Are our sensibilities set so high that we can’t speak our minds and upset those around us? So, why then, do some people share their every thought? No sooner than it enters his mind, the thought is out before they even know what they’re doing. Is keeping silent golden? Or only till its not. Over the years, I would love to be able to say that I have always been able to say the right thing at the right time. But that would be a total lie. I always put my foot right in it. Emma-erisms, as they are widely called. I am the best at saying the wrong thing at th...

It's not you, it's most definitely about me.

Hello, lovelies. I, like so many others, work with and for other people in and around my four jobs. I take care of my children, walk my dogs and run my household. It would be easy to say that I spend a large percentage of my day with my head down and my mouth closed. Actually, I have spent most of my life not saying how I feel, what I want or if it was something that I wanted to do. And yet, I have always been told that I’m the one in the driver’s seat. True, I am always the designated driver. But is it right to always do as I’m told? Never question the decisions? Never rocking the boat. Is the old adage, pick your battles, true? Or is it time to stand up and tell people what I actually think? I hate confrontation. And will do almost anything to avoid it. Yes, I am super opinionated, but as I’ve grown older, I have learnt to keep my thoughts to myself. Have I made the right decision? Does that mean I’ve been walked over and taken advantage of? Probably. So why have I spent my...

It's not me, it's most definitely you.

Hello, lovelies. We all have in our circle of friends that one person that is always right. That knows everything and is more than happy to tell you all the ways that you are wrong. But what happens when we hear their ideas, thoughts and beliefs over our own? Are they always right because they say they are? Or are they just telling us that because they have nothing else in theirs? Is it really you that’s wrong? Or has it always been them? I have always managed to surround myself with people that know better than I do, or so they tell me very, very often. They’re smarter than me. Have made better choices that I have. And wouldn’t have made the mistakes that I did. Basically, they’re just better people than me. And for the longest time I believed them. I know the struggles I face every day. I know when I don’t understand something. And I definitely know when I put my foot straight in it. So how can they not be correct in everything they say? But if I’m so caught up in my own fail...

Karma come, Karma go

Image
Hello, lovelies. It would be easy to say that many of us have had an experience in our lives that could have had a disastrous outcome, if it wasn’t for the hand of Karma stepping in and lending a hand. But does karma actually exist? Is there really an all-knowing sense of right and wrong that steps in when ever we are short changed? Does the saying, you reap what you sow, hold any truth? What goes around, will it really come around? Is there really such a thing as karma? Or is it just a way to hope that people really do get what they deserve? I’m not normally known for my belief in karma. I mean, really! Who is to say what good things should happen to another human being if they behave badly? But this just might have been the week to prove me wrong. Now, I have always tried to keep out of anything that doesn’t involve me, but as I was out shopping, and I found myself being pulled into a very unexpected situation. I needed to get some food for the week, so I packed up my car ...

5. 4. 3. 2. 1 and go!

Hello, lovelies. Have you ever had that week? The one where everything seems to go wrong. And not only wrong, but expensively wrong. How can just the 5 days of one week be so hectic? Is it just me? Am I doomed to awake on a Monday morning and end it on a Friday evening exhausted and even more poor than I was when started the week? Is this how my life is headed? Or does this finally mean that I am an adult? Is life all about the things we have to deal with? Or is it all about the little things in life? I don’t know about you, but the older I get the more I see that the things I once wanted and planned for, no longer hold the same appeal. My dream of living in the heart of one of the greatest cities in the world. To be surrounded by people from all over the world, all bringing their cultures, languages and histories. To be able to turn on my television and be able to watch what I want when I want. How can that not be seen as the pinnacle of a person’s life? I can travel all over...

Gone but not forgotten

Hello, lovelies. Yesterday we learnt of Prince Phillips passing at the age of 99. And although most of us have never met him, we can all agree that he was an iconic member of the historical Royal family. And love him or hate him, he was always there. And as our nation mourns, we can all relate to the loss of someone we love. Does death really mean the end of someone? Is it the end of who a person was? Or in this digital age, are our every moment recorded for anyone to see who we were? Or does a person never really leave us if we remember them? I was at work yesterday when I heard the news about Prince Phillip. And I have to say that I was a little shocked. I know that he had reached a grand old age, but the death of anyone is a sad thing. Death is always so final. Knowing that you’ll never be able to spend time with the person who’s gone. Never again to be offered a cup of tea by them. They’ll never be at the end of the telephone when you need to talk to them. They’re just ...

Happy Easter, everyone!

Image
Hello, lovelies. Today is a one of the highest Christian holidays. A day of joyous celebrations and breaking of the fast or sacrifices of the past 40 days. But what now? What have we got to look forward to now? And with Easter being a Christian holiday, what about the rest of the secular world. Is today all about chocolate? Or is there something for everyone on this sunny day? I don’t know about you, but the Easter Bunny has just been to my house. I may now have more chocolate Easter eggs in my house, that is ever possible to eat. But I’m going to give it a very good go. We’ve just finished our Easter roast, no mean feet as there is one vegan, one vegetarian and two meat eaters living under my roof. Not to mention my two dogs that are desperate to ‘join’ us in our meal, but sadly they’re both on a diet, so no scraps for them. Cue sad puppy eyes staring at me. But the thing holding the meal together was the mountain sized dish of roast potatoes. And after polishing off a mere t...
